Pentair salt system problems: start with the model and readings

A salt chlorine generator produces chlorine from dissolved salt in the pool water. It still requires routine chlorine and pH testing.

Low chlorine, a warning light, or visible scale does not identify a failed salt cell by itself. The generator, circulation system, operating schedule, and pool water all need to be considered. Before buying a replacement, record the exact cell model and the message on its controls.

Concho Valley Pool is a family-owned local business with 13+ years serving San Angelo and nearby communities, including Christoval, Grape Creek, Wall and Mertzon. We help owners collect useful information and assess the next service step without assuming every low-chlorine result calls for a new cell.

Why the exact Pentair system matters

Legacy IntelliChlor IC15, IC20, IC40, and IC60 cells differ from newer IntelliChlor Plus and LT models. Other Pentair systems also have their own instructions. Identify the cell, power equipment, and any connected automation before applying a salt target, interpreting a warning, or choosing a replacement.

For the legacy family, use Pentair’s IC15/20/40/60 manual; Plus and LT owners need the Plus/LT manual. A similar housing or shared brand name does not establish interchangeable connections or service procedures.

  • A low water-test chlorine reading needs context: when it was tested, recent use or treatment, and the generator’s operating schedule.
  • A flow warning calls for investigation of circulation and the model’s detection system.
  • Scale or trapped debris may call for cleaning, but an inspection should precede a treatment decision.
  • A recurring error needs its exact wording, not just a description such as “the salt light.”

Quick checklist before a service visit

  • Labels: Photograph the cell model and visible power-center or automation label without opening an electrical enclosure.
  • Readings: Record free chlorine, pH, salt-test result, test method, and date. Include the system’s displayed salt reading separately.
  • Settings: Note the chlorine-output setting, pump schedule, and any recent changes. Do not repeatedly alter settings while trying to capture a fault.
  • History: Record the last cell inspection or cleaning, approximate equipment age, and recent water additions or chemical treatments.
  • Symptoms: Note error messages, leaks, unusual sounds, and whether a breaker has tripped.

Keep homeowner checks outside live equipment

Collect records and externally visible information first. Do not open unions, look inside a removed cell, unplug equipment connections, or open electrical enclosures while the system is operating. Cell removal requires the correct power-isolation, pressure-release, and plumbing-isolation procedure for the installed equipment.

If electrical equipment is wet, a cable is damaged, or a breaker repeatedly trips, stop using the affected system and arrange qualified service. Do not keep resetting the breaker to test it.

Inspection and cleaning have different purposes

Pentair’s automatic cell-cleaning feature reduces scale accumulation but does not eliminate inspection. Follow the model’s inspection schedule and adjust attention to actual deposits and local water conditions. An inspection interval is not an instruction to acid-wash a clean cell.

Manufacturer procedures begin with appropriate isolation and a garden-hose cleaning method. Acid cleaning is conditional on deposits that require it. Excessive acid exposure can damage the cell. Do not scrape coated plates or substitute a pressure washer, stronger mixture, or longer soak. Use the exact instructions and a qualified service provider when the process or equipment is unfamiliar.

What we assess before recommending parts

An assessment can include visible equipment condition, reported errors, circulation, settings, and water-test readings. Our on-site digital water testing provides current information to help evaluate the pool alongside the equipment. Testing alone cannot prove that a cell or control board needs replacement.

Any proposed repair should identify the compatible part and explain whether cleaning, further diagnosis, or replacement is appropriate. Availability, pricing, and warranty eligibility require confirmation. Retain the model information, purchase record, and service history rather than relying on a blanket promise of coverage.

Keep a record of all pool chemicals recently added. Avoid adding salt solely because of a warning without verifying the reading against the model guidance.

Request Pentair salt-system help

Text 469-585-4093 with the cell model, exact error, recent test readings, and clear photos of the equipment and labels. Include your location and whether there is a leak or electrical concern. Photos help organize an assessment; a final diagnosis may require an on-site visit.
