Start with the label and the pressure trend

If your filter label identifies a Pentair Clean & Clear Plus CCP420, it is a four-cartridge filter. It does not use the backwash process used by many sand or DE filters. Confirm the model on the tank before ordering cartridges or following instructions from another Pentair product.

This guide helps San Angelo homeowners collect useful information and recognize when a filter needs attention. Concho Valley Pool is a family-owned local business with more than 13 years serving San Angelo and nearby communities, including Christoval, Grape Creek, Wall, and Mertzon.

Compare pressure under the same conditions

Record the clean starting pressure and pump speed after proper service. A variable-speed pump can show a different gauge reading simply because its RPM changed, so compare like with like. A single pressure number, without the clean baseline, is less useful than a trend.

Pentair’s cleaning guidance calls for attention at approximately 10 psi above the clean starting pressure, or when flow drops significantly. The CCP420 product page and cartridge-cleaning guide explain this model’s maintenance. A low or unresponsive gauge also needs checking; it should not be treated as proof that the system is depressurized.

Pressure release comes before opening the filter

A pressurized filter can cause serious injury. Before opening it, Pentair requires the pump and automatic controls to be turned off, electrical power isolated at the circuit breaker, and the manual air-relief valve fully opened. Stand clear and wait for pressure to release and the gauge to read zero. Never loosen or adjust the clamp while the system is powered or pressurized.

The complete procedure also covers valves, draining, reassembly, and a controlled restart. Clamp hardware differs between versions. Follow the manual for the actual filter and clamp; if you cannot identify the equipment or confidently isolate it, arrange service instead of opening the tank.

Cleaning is more than rinsing the outside

The cartridges are removed and rinsed with a garden hose according to the manufacturer’s procedure. A pressure washer can damage the filter media. Check pleats, end caps, seals, and the tank for deterioration. Chemical soaking is not an automatic part of every cleaning, and the correct treatment depends on the deposits and manufacturer instructions.

When to DIY vs When to Call Us

DIY: basic rinsing, O-ring re-greasing, and watching pressure trends are good homeowner tasks. Replace cartridges on a predictable schedule if you’re comfortable with the steps.

Call Concho Valley Pool when:

  • You see physical damage to cartridges (tears, collapsed pleats).
  • Pressure stays high after cleaning, or you suspect pump or plumbing restriction.
  • Water chemistry stays off despite correct filter maintenance—this usually needs professional testing and balancing.
  • It’s a commercial or apartment pool—we’re commercial-ready and handle larger systems.

Service proof and what we use

Concho Valley Pool is family-owned and CPO® certified (Certified Pool Operator), and we’re commercial-ready for HOAs, hotels, and apartment complexes.
