Pentair Clean and Clear Plus 420: checking your cartridge filter

The Pentair Clean & Clear Plus CCP420 is a complete filter with four cartridge elements and 420 square feet of total filtration area. It is cleaned by removing and rinsing the elements; it does not use a backwash cycle. Confirm the model on the tank before ordering replacement cartridges. Pentair lists the CCP420 specifications and model-specific manuals here.

Why this matters in San Angelo

Dust, leaves and heavy pool use can change how quickly a filter loads with debris. Record clean-filter pressure and pump speed so you have a useful baseline. Cloudy water or poor circulation deserves a check of the whole system rather than an automatic cartridge replacement.

Quick checklist: inspecting a CCP420

  • Compare pressure at the same pump speed and valve settings. Pentair calls for cleaning at about 10 PSI above clean starting pressure, or after a significant flow reduction.
  • Before opening, turn off the pump and automatic controls, isolate power at the breaker, open the manual air-relief valve and stand clear until pressure is fully relieved and the gauge reads zero.
  • Follow the exact opening procedure for your filter’s clamp design. Never loosen or tighten a pressurized clamp.
  • Inspect all four elements, seals and the tank for damage. Record pressure and cleaning dates rather than relying on a fixed two-week schedule.

Practical maintenance tips

Use a garden hose to rinse the pleats, not a pressure washer. Use only a compatible cleaner according to its label and Pentair’s instructions, then rinse thoroughly. Follow the correct reassembly and air-purging startup procedure in the Clean & Clear Plus manual. This checklist does not replace that procedure.

When to DIY and when to get help

Recording pressure and checking for visible leaks are useful owner checks. Only open the filter if you understand its pressure hazards and can follow the model-specific instructions. If the tank, clamp or air-relief valve is damaged, stop using the system and have a qualified pool professional assess it. See Pentair’s filter safety guidance before attempting service.

Parts and replacement decisions

Choose replacement elements for the exact CCP420 model and assembly. A larger cartridge is not a general-purpose upgrade for an existing tank. Check the parts list before buying cartridges, manifolds or seals, and have a professional evaluate any change to filter size or plumbing.

Visible damage or persistent poor performance after appropriate cleaning may justify replacement. Staining or age alone does not establish the cause of a circulation problem, and new cartridges do not guarantee lower chemical use or pump runtime.
