Pool cleaning starts with identifying what needs attention: floating leaves, settled dirt, cloudy water and equipment problems do not all have the same remedy. Removing visible debris is useful, but a cleaner or vacuum does not replace water testing and chemical management.

Choose the cleaning task that matches the problem

Use a surface net for floating debris and a suitable vacuum or cleaner for the floor. Brush with tools appropriate to the finish, especially around steps and areas the cleaner misses. If water remains cloudy, review testing, circulation and filter condition before assuming another chemical dose will solve it.

Before changing the treatment plan

  • Record recent test results and every chemical already added.
  • Check accessible baskets and observe water returning to the pool.
  • Compare filter pressure with its clean baseline at the same pump setting.
  • Identify the filter type before deciding whether it needs backwashing or cartridge cleaning.

Testing and Safe Equipment Checks

CDC recommends checking chlorine and pH at least twice daily, with more frequent testing during heavy use. Follow the test method and product labels. Smell and water color cannot replace measurements.

Keep swimmers out if visibility is poor or there is an equipment safety concern. Turn equipment off before opening a basket or filter and follow the manufacturer’s pressure-release instructions. Never mix pool chemicals. Stop using faulty electrical equipment and have it assessed by a qualified professional.
