Pentair 520 cartridge filter: identify the system before ordering parts

A search for a “Pentair 520 cartridge filter” usually means the Clean & Clear Plus CCP520. The useful first step is a photo of the tank label, followed by the current pressure reading and the last cleaning date. Those details help separate an overdue cleaning from a damaged cartridge, an incorrect part, or a circulation problem elsewhere in the system.

What the 520 number means

Pentair lists the CCP520 as a 520-square-foot filter with four cartridges. The 520 describes total filter area, not pool gallons or the area of each individual element. This cartridge system does not require backwashing. Sand-filter laterals and a backwash routine do not belong on its maintenance checklist. See Pentair’s Clean & Clear Plus specifications for the model family.

Read the full label rather than ordering from tank color or a remembered number. Keep the serial number, manufacturing information and a photograph of the clamp with your service records. Pentair provides separate manuals for spring-clamp and cast-clamp versions, so the instructions must match the installed equipment.

Use pressure readings as a record, not a guess

Pentair’s Clean & Clear Plus cleaning guide calls for cleaning at approximately 10 psi above the original starting pressure, or when flow is significantly reduced. A variable-speed pump changes the reading with its speed. Record the clean baseline and pump RPM together, and compare readings under the same operating conditions.

A higher reading alone does not establish that the cartridges need replacement. Give the technician the trend: gradual increase since cleaning, an abrupt change, or pressure that never returned to its earlier level. Include any recent valve, pump-speed or equipment changes. Avoid changing several settings simply to make the gauge look normal; that makes the original symptom harder to evaluate.

Keep the lid and clamp closed until proper service

A pool filter is a pressurized vessel. Pentair warns that trapped air can force the lid off and cause severe injury or death. Do not loosen, tighten or adjust the clamp while the system is running or pressurized. A timer or automation command is not a substitute for the manual’s power-isolation and pressure-relief requirements.

Pentair recommends professional filter maintenance in its filter safety center. If the tank leaks, the clamp looks damaged, the gauge is unreadable, or you are unsure which manual applies, stop troubleshooting at the equipment and arrange qualified service. This article is a preparation guide, not an opening, reassembly or restart procedure.

What to ask about cartridge cleaning

Ask whether the service includes inspecting all four elements, the manifolds, tank seal, gauge and clamp, then documenting operation after reassembly. Pentair’s cleaning guide specifies a garden hose with a straight-flow nozzle. Do not substitute a pressure washer or an improvised aggressive cleaning method. Chemical treatment of oils or mineral deposits must follow the applicable manual and cleaner label; there is no universal soak recipe for every deposit.

Ask to see photographs of any suspected damage before approving replacement. Useful questions include whether the media is torn, an end cap is damaged, the elements fit correctly, or the restriction remains after appropriate cleaning. A date on the calendar by itself is a poor explanation for buying a new set.

Match replacement parts to the actual filter

The Pentair replacement-parts sheet lists R173578 for the 520 model and specifies four required. The sheet also includes manufacturing-date notes for other components. Confirm the current replacement or superseding part against your label with the supplier before paying, particularly on an older tank.

Check whether a quote covers one element or a complete set, whether labor and seals are separate, and which return conditions apply if the part does not fit. Do not assume a cartridge from another Clean & Clear size will upgrade the existing housing. Ask for the exact part numbers on the estimate so later orders can be checked against the service record.

Request filter help in San Angelo

For a service inquiry, send a pool overview, the filter label and an equipment-pad photo, along with the symptoms and last known cleaning date. Photograph only what you can reach safely without opening equipment. If you have pressure readings, include the pump speed and whether the reading was taken before or after cleaning.

Review Concho Valley Pool’s San Angelo pool cleaning services, then contact Concho Valley Pool or text 469-585-4093 to ask about filter-service scope, current availability and an estimate. A photo can help prepare the visit; the condition of internal parts still needs an appropriate inspection.
